I'm going to California in a week for vacation. Any tips on how to not look like a confused tourist? |
Travel Info particularly when getting lost Travel Tips Whatever you do, no matter what they say to you, no matter how sorry you feel for them DO NOT give money to panhandlers!!!!! I'll say it again, DO NOT hand out money to anyone for any reason. Don't wear Hawaiian shirts and khaki shorts, really, don't wear shorts if you don't normally. That really makes you stand out. Carrying a camera around your neck does the same thing. Staring up at everything, and smiling at everyone--same thing. You really want to try to blend in and look like you know what you're doing. Bad people look for tourists to rob and when you stand out, you may look like a victim. Cab drivers are a good source of information about the city, same with many bus drivers. Try to look at a map of the area you'll be in before you go and get a feel for the area. Getting lost happens to locals, don't worry too much. You may want to do a search of neighborhoods--for example, the Tenderloin in San Francisco isn't really the best neighborhood around, but it's right off of Union Square--very well liked by tourists and out of town shoppers. You wouldn't know that if you didn't do your research first. Others Leave your fanny pack at home, get a gps thing. Don't take so many pictures. Dress for WARM weather if going to SoCal. Finally research your destinations and get directions before hand so that you dint have to ask for directions, and be prepared for road rage. Just be yourself and be confident. I'm a British guy who was suddenly called to Inglewood CA (I had never previously been to California) but nobody knew I was a Brit until I opened my mouth yea dress for really HOTT weather trust me i live overhere and leave ur fanny pack at home like the other guy said......................... if u get lost just do what i do and i ask the guy in the car next to u ha lol wear flipflops and you'll be fine Just be yourself, some places tourists are in the majority. There's nothing wrong with being confused when you're in a strange place. |
