Does anyone have any tips on driving long distances?

Travel Info
A friend and I are going on a road trip this summer. We are traveling to a city that is about eight hours away, and I will be doing all the driving. I have never driven for that long all at one time -- the longest I've been in the car (driving) is about 3.5 hours. Of course we will stop along the way, but does anyone have any other tips on how to handle driving for that long? (It's long by my standards!) I am a little worried.

Thanks.

Travel Tips
I actually just finished drivers ed 6 months ago and they taught us about this in the class.

Just follow this simple checklist and you should be fine.

- Check your brake fluid, wiper fluid, battery, and oil before you go to make sure everything is operating properly.

- Make sure you have a spare tire, and a gas can just in case of an emergency. A pair of jumper cables is also recommended(And make sure you also have the tools to change that tire.)

- Fill your car up with gas the night before, this will save you time and will prevent any mishaps the day you leave.

- Get a full nights rest the night before that is atleast 8 hours. So if you need to adjust yourself and go to sleep a bit earlier do so. And when you wake up the next morning, eat breakfast to jumpstart your mind. This way you will recover from morning groginess more quickly so you are ready to drive.

- Finally, when driving stop and take a break every 100 miles or 2 - 3 hours based on what you feel is right. If possible switch drivers at this time also. During this break take at least 7 min. to walk around and stretch, use the restroom, drink water etc.

* Note: Absolutely avoid all stimulants prior to your driving, whether it be alcohol or drugs. If possible try to avoid prescription medicine that would affect your ability to drive.

Thats all I can think of.
Hope it helps!

bring a big bag of weed and a shitload of papers :) have fun
Dont worry 8hrs is no big deal you will be fine.
If you think you are going to tire or become stressed it is best to drink Orange Juice instead of coffee. This will keep up your Vitamin C level and keep you more alert.
Stop now and then to stretch your legs, bring munchies, and someting good to listen to. I like to listen to books on tape while I drive long distances. Makes time go faster.
1. Check your vehicle, or have it checked, to be sure everything is in good shape BEFORE you leave.
2. Pack the day before you leave and then get a good nights sleep.
3. Drive at a speed YOU are comfortable with, so long as it is above the 'minimum' required speed. You are NOT required to go at the maximum speed limit.
4. Stop whenever you feel stiff, tired, or fatigued. Pull off the road, get out and walk around, etc.
5. Turn OFF your cell phone, and concentrate on your driving.

You do NOT need to make the "eight hours" all at one time. (I often take 10 hours or longer to make so called 8 hour trips!)
