Luggage question?

Why did it take so long for someone to put wheels on suitcases? I know they've been available for a while, but you would think someone would have thought of it sooner.

Since 1970s? I am not sure.
My guess: for a really long time there was always someone to carry your luggage. Only the rich traveled, and the poorest who immigrated (probably with next to nothing to take with them.)
So there were only a couple of decades without wheels on luggage, really.
