Am I wasting my time?

I have recently come home from a holiday and need to make a formal complaint about the hotel etc. Am I wasting my time or will I actually get somewhere?

You may as well try. Sometimes it's worth it.
You will get results...provided you take your claim to the hotel's corporate office. If you complain to the hotel itself, it will just gets swept under the rug by their management. Point out your complaint on the company's website...be polite and concise with your email. You'll get some kind of comphensation.
just do it! if everybody think it is a waste of time then nobody will.
Complain. We did when we were there and as we queued at the airport the rep came over to us and gave us a refund (we had a overnight trip to a different hotel than the one we stayed in for the rest of the holiday and it wasn't up to scratch).
It's not a waste of time. Often complaints are handled by an office higher up in the chain of command so it will be dealt with. I'm not saying that you will obtain a refund/compensation but you can feel certain that taking some time out of your day will make the hotel better for the next visitors. (at the very least you'll get good karma out of it)
My advice is that if you're a member of their frequent guest program to include that on the complaint. It draws their attention, especially if you're in a premium category.
