Go to Ireland. Rent a cabin cruiser from Carrick Craft at Carrick on Shannon. You can literally cross the entire country in a boat. Dozens of automatic locks let you change altitude with your boat without rapids. You just wait your turn, the lock opens, you pull your boat in. The lock fills or drains. You leave the lock and continue on up or down river. And perfect for Americans, they speak lovely English and the boat needs no license. Also, Guinness tastes much better in an Irish pub that it does in an American gin joint.

And don't forget to go to Leap castle (built around 1200 AD). You want to see that shimmering green ghost? Go to Leap Castle. The county Kikenny (sic?) is happily bordered by the Shannon River so a rental car will get you to the castle and back to the river in a single day or night.
