Travel Info Do I need a passport to fly to alaska drive to canada drive back to alaska and fly back to delaware? Travel Tips Good grief, people. If you don't know, don't answer. Although plans were to require passports for land crossings, they haven't gotten it all figured out yet (mostly on the Mexican border). So photo ID and birth certificate still suffice till at least January 1, 2008. Their wording even suggests that it will likely slip further into the future as it has twice already. Flying from Alaska to any of the other 49 states is DOMESTIC travel and DOES NOT require a passport, even though you fly over Canada. I've did it three times last month, including once last night and many, many times each year. I looked out the 737 window at over 1,000 miles of Canadian mountains and coastline and only had my driver's license with me. Since January 5, 2007, if you FLY to Canada or have an airport connection in Canada, you MUST have a passport. The airline won't board you without one. But to drive from Delaware through Canada and then fly from Fairbanks or Anchorage to any US city, you DON'T need a passport. But it is the easiest ID to have along for any international border and then you'll be all set for the next 10 years if you see a cool web-fare to Paris or want to vacation in New Zealand at the last minute. Source(s): Here's what the US Sate Department says: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbp... Other Travel Tips Yes, you need a passport to drive into canada now. If you skip the canada part, no. YES, Canada is a foreign country, (if you live in the United States. If you are American, you are still able (right now) to cross the border _by car_ without a passport. But you do need to have proper photo ID. http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbp... Hope that helps! I dont think you need a passport to enter canada at the moment, in any case when you get to the border, there will most likely be some sort of visitors center where you can get temporary "pass" into canada if it is needed. But I dont think you need a passport, have fun. |
