Travel Tips
You as a UK citizen should have no problems coming to the US from Canada and since you're going that far, you may as well visit us, too. Border hassles are the same as any other "friendly" country. Have your passport ready and don't bring in anything odd. They get wound up about fruit, though our bananas weren't a problem recently. I think it has to do with a fear of bringing in non native bugs or something. They seem more worried about that kind of thing, than, say, a person with a very contagious form of TB.

If you do the east coast of Canada, you may want to consider the "Down East" area of Maine, or Portland, Maine since they are so close and are quite beautiful. You could then go a couple of hours south of there by car or bus and visit Boston which has a lot of history that any Brit would appreciate. Then, if you have time, you could travel down to NYC--arguably the greatest city in the world.

If you do the west of Canada, be sure to allow enough time in Vancouver, BC--a wonderful city, and then you can take a car or bus a couple hours south and visit Seattle. Victoria, BC claims to be more British than Great Britain.

Have fun!

P.S. I would go earlier (in the fall) or later (in the spring) as weather in all these locales can be miserable during the winter. Source(s): Personal experience--American who's traveled these roads.
Other Travel Tips
done that...
If by car:
you have to stop at the road booth, show them your passport. Then you go in for filling up this green paper (the same one they give you in the plane), you have to provide an address to where you are going to stay (a hotel address works). You have to pay a fee (at the time around $20), they stamp your passport, and you are good to go for 3 months.

If by plane, be aware that the immigration and customs control for the US is actually inside the Canadian Airport. Same routine as a regular international US border crossing.

So no major problem if your country belongs to the visa waiver program, the UK does.
have a nice trip
As a born-and-bred Canadian who has crossed the border into the U.S., I believe I am qualified to answer that.

Yes, U.S. Customs would let you cross into the USA, but be warned, the American border guards will make you feel uneasy. They ask you about a million questions -- what do you do for a living; ever been fingerprinted; ever been arrested. My mother was searched because she made the mistake of bringing 4 apples into the US during a road trip.

Hell, in the 80s, a friend of mine got hauled into an interogation room at the border just because he was an organiser with a trade union, at which time he was asked if he was or had ever been a member of the Canadian Communist Party or the Marxist-Leninist Party of Canada.

Now they ask you if you plan on leaving anything in th US; who you are going to see while there, etc.

My suggestion? Stay in Canada while you're here and avoid the hassle of crossing into the USA.
Experience.
