Tips for first time travel to India?

One of my good friends is going to India for few months or so for work and travel. Having never been there and not knowing anyone in our circle who has, I ask the Yahoo answer community for any suggestions/advice of what to be careful or watch out for a single mid 20s single female. I've heard some scary things.

just few tips

never travel alone at night(even public transport is not safe at night )

dont talk much to strangeres
always keep your belonging close to u

Much much safer than middle east and most of all it is a FREE DEMOCRATIC COUNTRY. Avoid Kashmir.
