How many countries are there in the world? |
Travel Info all countries dosent matter. Travel Tips It depends a lot on who you ask. The ARRL recognizes 337 "entities" (a word used in place of countries) in the world.194 click here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3i5nmt2k... and try to keep up there are 192 nations in the U.N. many insist that there are 194. so it's either 192, 193 or 194 Last year I put up an email asking the number of countries in the world. The purpose of the email was also to get an idea of the extent of book cultures. There were two parts: the number of present countries and the number in the past. I keep getting emails asking if I have an answer. I do not have a satisfactory answer. The US State Department stated there are 190 Independent States in 2000 the US had diplomatic relatons with. The CIA World Fact Book also lists these. These are not all the countries in the worlld however it seems. In addition, not all countries appear to be members of the United Nations. The United Nations site also lists Unrepresented Nations and Peoples (UNPO) to complicate matters further. There are also still some colonies (eg French overseas territories to complicate things further). As far as countries in the past goes, this raises the issue of what is a country (lists might be obtained from the foreign affairs departments of such countries as Great Britain, France, Russia etc). The US State Department lists countries the US had diplomatic relations with by year and this has remained fairly constant for the last few years after rising in the early 1990s. The number of nations in the United Nations has risen dramatically since its inception but not all nations are members; East Timor will soon be a new country. The map librarians at the Australian National Library also informed me that the extent of the known world was not fully known until 1800 so beyond this date it would be very difficult to assess the countries. There are far more languages than cultures in the world. There are 33,000 language names listed in volume 10 of the Encyclopedia of Language and LInguistics and its seems to me that there are no more than 33,000 book cultures (depending on how a book is defined) which of course also could be listed by country. Paul Knobel Sydney, Australia I think that there are 202 countries in the world |
