Relocatting NC. Help as it is our 1st time. Arguing with wife. Please help. experienced people definte welcome |
Travel Info Wife and I are going to move to Charlotte NC next yr from houston. We own a home here. With a prepayment penalty that will be up next May. Cant sell the house now. We work for Chase so can transfer on our dime which is fine. Question is, Sell the house first, look for another house first? Sell house first ask for transfer then look for another house? Sell the house get into an aprtment then buy a house there? Look for another house there while selling this house? Storage needs to be thought of. We do not want to get stuck with two mortgages we can if we must but dont want to. We have literally argued about this because she is so scared to do this. She is from Indonesia and has never moved since coming to the US and of course her mother is here. I am from PA and cant wait to leave. I am accustomed to moving. Really need some help. My family all lives up North. I am really looking for some help with people that have been in this kind of situation. Travel Tips I relocated from Houston to Charlotte once & settled for buying a house in Rock Hill, SC. That was because I had a straight shot up 77 to my office & the price of property was lower in SC. However, I transfered at Company request & they bought my house in Houston at "fair market value." Things to keep in mind are, 1.) Though the cost of living is slightly lower in NC, you will lose buying power due to their income & property tax. 2.) Gasoline costs more there. 3.) The cost of transportating & storing household goods is costly. 3.) One can never tell when a corporation is going to reevaluate their needs & cut their remote offices (Those in remote locations have considerably fewer options.) It is helpful to be in a place where you can easily network to find another job. Should you decide to transfer I'd suggest you sell the house 1st because property rates are likely to drop in the Houston area & it is always helpful to have the money on hand when purchasing a new house. Find an apartment in Houston, store as many household items as possible, then arrange for the transfer. It is slightly less expensive to have movers pick up goods at a storage site than a house. If you plan to rent a truck & do the move yourself, you will find it easier to move from a storage site. I'd also suggest your wife stay in Houston to help coordinate operations as you rent an appartment or motel room in the Charlotte area. My wife was invaluable in Houston when it came to clearing up those little things we'd overlooked. Remember it will take time to recoup the expense of moving... even if the move is a promotion. Don't forget realtor fees on the sale of your home as they can eat up a significant part of your equity... watch the title companies carefully & check their prices as some can steal 10% of the price you get from selling the home... check them out because the State of Texas allows legal thievery when it comes to those people. All they do is check your property line & make sure the stakes are in the right place... then they screw the seller big time. Others If Chase is relocating you for their requirements they should pay your expenses including moving and storage costs and treveling expenses. Depending on your position there you may also be entitled to a bridge mortgage for a new purchase until your home is sold, or they may take over your home payments or buy the home to free you to repuchase. Boeing Aircraft once moved me from Florida to Pa, near Philly. I was a manager, but not a high enough levev mgr to get the mtg buyout/bridge. These things are negotiable with your emplyer. If this move is solely your request then drop back and punt. |
