How do people (who are not rich) travel for months or years at a time?!?

Travel Info
I always hear stories of these people who spent a year or two abroad, or 6 months in Europe, Asia, Russia, etc. etc. etc.

How do people (you, or people you know) manage to spend so long traveling? Where do they get the money from, how do they put everything on hold, how do they organize all the travel visa? how do they get into that state of mind? I must know how do they do it?!!

I want to travel the world, obviously not in luxury, but i can barely afford to live in one place.. let alone many different places. (i live in NYC.. and i need to get the hell out a here!)

Please share your thoughts or ideas or suggestions with me. Especially if you've done something like this before.

Travel Tips
You can stay in hostels, camp or stay with friends. If you go to pour countries, everything is SUPER cheap...at least once you get out of the big cities and even in the cities it is cheaper than the US or Europe. Some people may take out loans to pay for cars or homes in the US. Some people do research abroad or work jobs. If you don't drink, you can save a lot of money. If you don't play video games, you can save a lot of money. It's all about priorities.
Others
Well, my mom's ex bf who lived with us used to travel around the world. He stayed in cheap places and did odd jobs when he ran out of money. He also talked to lots of people and basically made them be his friends and then he helped them anyway he could and then they would help him out with things like where to stay and what's cheap - it's all about the connections.
work on a cruise ship
go up to people's yachts in dock and see if they need hands
work on farms and other places where they pay in cash
bartend
Join the Navy
you could backpack! and some people go on foreign exchange programs...you could probably do that because you could live some some ppl orr you wouldn't have to, but im guessing it'll probably be cheaper.
There are a lot of other places to live that are a lot cheaper to live in than the US. So if you can manage to scrape together a few thousand bucks in savings, and are willing to leave your job, lose your house, and pack or get rid of your possessions, you could make your way in Asia, Eastern Europe, or South America for a while. You are lucky enough to live in one of three cities in the US (DC and San Fran are the other two) where getting visas for a multi-country trip is actually possible without too many hassles, because you can visit the embasies you need a visa from to speed up the process.

For travel once you are off the plane, you need to keep it cheap. In Europe, there are rail passes you can get that let you go anywhere in Europe for a few months for one fixed fee, and there are usually accomodations that you can stay at without paying an arm and a leg, as long as you realize they are a step down from motel six in quality. If you are under a certain age (26, I think) there is a bigger discount on the rail pass and youth hostels you could stay in.

Good luck!
Stay in hostels or cheap boarding houses, use public transport and get a job in a bar.
