Will I Have to turn on my computer when I go through airport security? |
Travel Info I have a 3+ hour layover in Baltimore and I plan on bringing my laptop to watch a movie while I wait. Will I be required to turn on my laptop at the security checkpoint? Will the x-ray machine also effect my data on the hard drive? Travel Tips Airport Security Checks Despite some experiences mentioned, when you go through airport security, you may be asked to turn your laptop on. Make sure your battery has enough power left to avoid delays. The process may also be sped up by booting from a floppy diskette. X-ray machines at airports are not a threat to your laptop's hard-drive or floppy disks. However, the security checkpoint conveyer belt is a target for thieves who watch for unattended equipment passing through the x-ray machines. As a result you may want to have a security guard hand check your machine rather than putting it through the conveyer. Others Typically no. They could make you do anything they want but I have never had to turn my laptop on. And no, the x-ray machine will not harm your computer in anyway. I just traveled from Canada to the UK with my laptop and they did not make me turn it on. All they asked me to do was take it out of my bag and put it in one of the bins so it could go through the x-ray machine. My laptop has been working just fine since, so I don't think there will be any damage to your laptop. I think you'll be okay. No. They will just ask you to take it out to go thru the scanner. Your data won't be damaged by those x ray machines. I'e had to turn on my laptop and even my cell phone before in airports. No the x ray machine will not affect it. |
