Travel Info Can anyone suggest the best cell phone carrier to use in Alaska? Travel Tips It really depends on where you go. If you are going to the major areas (SE Alaska, Anchorage down to the coast, the North slope), there are a few choices. If you are going to a small, isolated area like Dutch Harbor, there is only one company if any. If I recall correctly, Verizon Wireless uses the ACS Wireless (Alaska Communication Systems). ACS covers SE Alaska, the Anchorage area, south to Homer and north to Fairbanks. I believe ACS also covers Prudhoe Bay and Barrow in the far north. I believe Alaska Digitel is the major competetor to ACS. Alaska Digitel covers most the same area as ACS. They cover Anchorage, down to Homer up only to Palmer. They cover the Glennallen area. They have coverage aroudn Juneau and in Prudhoe Bay. Most major carriers either have some of their own equipment in Alaska or have roaming plans. I believe Sprint has agreements for coverage in the most populated places in Alaska. The same with AT&T/Cingular. If you have a plan already, check with your provider to see if they have agreements. If not, wait until you get there and talk to the locals to see who they use. Like I said, ACS and Alaska Digitel are the two biggest local service providers. Some communities have their own service providers (like Dutch Habor is pretty much covered only by Alaska Wireless Communications).
