Travel Tips
You apply at the post office. You need an official copy of your birth certificate, current government-issued photo ID (ex. driving license), SSN, two passport photos, and about $100. You can get passport photos at copy centers and drugstores. There is a form to complete, and the form is available at the post office.

The postal clerk will check the form and your information before accepting the application. The fee is $97 plus the cost of mailing the applicaiton to the passport agency.

The rules changed at the begining of 2007 requiring passports for air travel between the USA and Canada, Mexico, and a few other countries. The change in the rules resulted in a huge spike in passport applications and it is currently taking more than 3 months for a new passport to be issued. You can pay an extra $60 and get the passport in 5 to 6 weeks if you need to travel soon.
Others
Most towns and cities offer passport application services at a passport agency or post office - not all locations of the post office just one or two. If you live in a large city, there may be passport office. Get your passport photo taken at drug store or camera supply place before you go. The trip to a passport agency has to be done in person because they require you take an oath.

The passport backlog this year is tremendous. I don't know how many weeks you can expect to wait.
