Why are there so many shoes, boots, or trainers dumped on Aroads?

During a 20 minute trip on a dual carriageway today I passed about 15 shoes.

Well count yourself lucky that you didn't see any feet attached to them.

Weird isn't it? I like the ones that appear hanging in pairs on overhead cables.
That's how you're supposed to dispose of them so that their spirits can rise.
