Mailing for free?

say, I want to mail a letter to X person, I write my address in the adressee part and X's address in the sender's part, i don't put a stamp on it so it will obviously be returned to the sender. will i be able to get away with mailing a letter for free?

The geniuses at the Post Office have a way of deducing whether there was a stamp on it, and they will charge postage to deliver it to an address, yours or theirs, or it goes to the Dead Letter office.
