Is the cost of living in Mexico cheaper than the USA? |
Travel Info I heard a you can live like a King/Queen there and wondered if it would be worth it. I get a montly pension from the USA Gov. and would have a small regular income. Travel Tips I am a retired American living in Mexico Expenses vary in different parts of the country. One person said you can rent an apt. for $40 or $50 dollars a mnth...that is REALLY strange! I live in a non-touristy area know to have lower costs than other areas..I rent a nice, but not lux. 2 bedroom house for about $340.00 a month and that is avg. Elec here is about $15 a month, Water $22.00 a YEAR, gas for house $10.00 a month, basic phone $30.00 a month, DSL internet$25.00 a month. Gasoline less than 70 cents a liter, groceries about same as in U.S. Fruits and veggies at the market extemely cheap. Restaurants 1/2 the price or less...except McDonalds or the like.Plumber, electrician etc very cheap. Your biggest savins are rent and utilities. You won't live like a king, but your money does go furthur if you are careful. Can live in my area for less than $1400 a month decently. If you like the finer things and shop a lot, have to allow for that. Need to allow for yearly car ins. ( about $300.00), visa renewal yearly, health costs ( MUCH cheaper here). If you have a regular income f over $1000.00 you can get a n FM3 visa and not have to go to the border every 6 months to renew 6 month tourist visa. For more info you can do a we search on "retiring in Mexico" or email me. Have to adapt to the culture and learn the language, but thats part of the fun of retirement. New experiences and constant learning keep you younger. If you want to live where there are many gringos or in a touristy area, your expenses will be quite a bit higher. Area with few gringos is cheaper. Others Since USA may turn Mexamerica soon, maybe you won't have to move there. Have a good one. yes its cheaper to live in mexico than the USA Yes, in general it is much cheaper to live there than in the US. Of course every country has it's rich areas. Just about any underdevoloped country your money will go a lot farther. I'm in Pakistan now living on just $1000 a month and I have a luxury apartment, a full time cleaning lady who cleans and does my laundry, a private tutor for my daughter, a full time live in servant to do any errands I don't want to do my self, and my daughter is getting a much better education than at the public school where we were living in Michigan, and it only costs me $60 a month. But living outside of your own home country has its disadvantages. Sometimes there are language problems for me (not my daughter, she has become trilingual), there will be cultural misunderstandings, and you have to take the time to really get to know and understand the local culture. But, there is a whole world outside of the US. Left the US and am loving it. I think there are a few cities with large populations of people from USA and Canada. Guadalajara is one. Do a search. The cost of living is less, but the standard of living is also lower. i live in mexico city & i travel to the US a lot... i actually think living in both places costs almost the same actually, if you go to a store like Louis Vuitton or Bvlgari here, everything costs wayy more than it does in the US. :) good luck !! |
