Which British towns have a maypole apart from Holywood, Co Down? |
Travel Info On May Day each year there is a festival, with dancing round the maypole and the election of a May Queen, and the town is made traffic free and stalls line the street. Any other towns do this? Holywood Maypole, one of the very few to be found in Northern Ireland, is situated at the junction of High Street and Shore Street. Legend has it that the crew of a Dutch ship which ran aground on the nearby shore around 1700 erected the ship's mast in thanks for their survival and danced around it with local girls on the eve of May Day. The mast, some 70 feet tall, is not however the original of all those years ago, as it has been destroyed and replaced often in the intervening years. http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-27...
