How long until you can re-enter the UK?

My American girlfriend stayed with me in England for almost 6 months between October 06 and Feb 07. She was using a visitors visa. My question is how soon can she return? We now plan to marry but we want to be together as soon as is possible.

Since I have been through the same process just over a year ago it would be my pleasure to inform you of the proceedings.

Firstly she will have to apply for a fiancee visa via http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk. This costs roughly 拢350 (expensive I know, if only that was the end). All the information you need about the requirements are on the form/website. However, some important things to note are:
The British Govt. will want proof of practically everything about your girlfriend and yourself. Identity (passport); your financial status in order to show that you can support your girlfriend, who will not be able to work for the first 6 months on that visa; proof of where you live and if you are a homeowner your mortgage details, if not (like us), and you are planning to stay in your parents house then they will need to provide the deeds/mortgage details of their property as well as a letter addressed appropriately to acknowledge that your parents permit you both to stay there. Either this letter, or another, should also contain proof that you intend to marry within the 6 month period (examples of wedding plans made or such-like). An aside note, planning a wedding with 6 months notice can be done!
After the 6 month period and providing that you are married your new wife will be able to apply for an 'extended leave to remain' visa which lasts a further 2 years and costs about the same as the original. At this point you can then apply for settlement. I cannot give you information on this stage yet because we are not there yet ourselves.
