Well, it was the English colonists who decided to "copy" the English names.

You will also find lots of French names (Paris, Versailles, Baton Rouge, New Orleans), Spanish names (Los Angeles, New Mexico, California, San Juan) and Native American names (Connecticut, Dakota, Omaha) among many, many others... because of the influence of those who settled there.

There are names from presidents and important statesmen and explorers (Washington, Jefferson, Jackson, Columbus)

And places might be named because of the terrain or geography... if it's on a river, it might end with " -mouth"... or if at the coastline, it might end with " - port".

There are plenty of place names in America that are rare in the UK if they exist at all... like towns ending in "-burg" or in "-ville" or "-dam". Places that the English did not settle (or at least, they were captured/renamed).

Considering that the UK is roughly the area of one medium-large US state (and there are 49 other states with places to name)... I think you'll find there's actually an enormous variety of city and town names in America!

maybe,just maybe because of how england first controlled america before america won their independence,but i dont know its just me and how U.S history is =/

Because alot of the people who first came to America were British and they named these cities after ones in the UK.
Maybe because the US was a British colony?

because when America started out many people came over from Europe and named cities after their homeworld... there are also a lot of states here that have the same city names that exist in other states - they don't do that in your country?
