Why do people think they can eat their cake and eat it too? |
Travel Info Why do people think they can eat their cake and eat it too? Travel Tips Well, there are some people who try to "get away with" things because it gives them a sense of power or freedom to "get one over" on someone else. So the answer there would be "because it makes them feel good." However, I think most people who try to have their cake and eat it too just aren't conscious that they're trying to do such a thing. All too commonly people don't consider the effects of their behavior on other people (or if they do, they do it through the very limited and subjective lens of how they would feel in your shoes), Instead they think about what *they* need and what *they* fear - and as a result, they just try to do what they think will work out for them best. There are so, so many self-justifying schemas built into our personalities and emotionally, very little incentive to "do the right thing." There's just no percentage in sacrificing yourself for someone who may not appreciate the result. So people try to do what's going to save themselves, and help themselves, without realizing they are trying to get something for nothing. So in that case the answer is "because they don't know any better" or "because they can't see what they're doing." Then too, there's a very limited sense in which people are ruled by their own selfishness, and without having a scenario attached to this question, it's possible this could be one of those moments. In which case the answer would be "because they can." Others Can't have your cake and eat it too - I always thought it was a silly motto, because there's no point in having the cake if you're not going to eat it. The way you put it though (if not a typo) makes me realise that what it means is - once you've eaten it, you can't eat it again. |
