Travel Info what exactly is the difference between the UK, Britain, Great Britain, and England? i live in california and me and my friend have no idea. Travel Tips The UK or United Kingdom is a politcal entity and comprises the countries, England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. Great Britain is a geological entity, that is it is the name of the Island that England, Wales, and Scotland occupy. Think of England, Wales, Scotland, and NI as being like US states and the UK being like the US. Great Britian would then be equivalent to America. Others The Uk=United Kingdom. It is the British Isles including Ireland and Scotland. England is the island proper. G. Britain is also the island proper. Just a more imperialistic name. Previous answerer: NO!!! England, Scotland and Wales make up GREAT BRITAIN (GB) which is often just called "Britain". GREAT BRITAIN plus Northern Ireland makes up the UNITED KINGDOM (UK). Hence the cover of my passport says "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland". Southern Ireland, usually just known as IRELAND or EIRE is a completely separate and self-governing country. The "BRITISH ISLES" is a geographical (rather than political) term describing all of the above and other small surrounding islands. http://www.realdaysout.co.uk/map/images/... http://www.montserratreporter.org/pics/b... Great Britain, is the union of England and Wales with Scotland. The United Kingdom is Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Simply put... Great Britain (Britain) = England, country - capital = London Wales, country and Principality - capital = Cardiff Scotland, country - capital = Edinburgh United Kingdom is made up of... Commonly known as The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland Southern Ireland known as the Republic of Ireland, and also Eire, capital = Dublin, has not been part of the United Kingdom since the 1920's.
