Hi, I live near Chesterfield, Derbyshire. they are closing everything down around here lol. but seriously it depends how far you want to travel. I live about 1/2 a mile from the now closed and defiantly knocked about a bit coalite smokeless fuel/ chemical site. about 5 miles away is Stavely Chemicals(now closed and being demolished) if you are ever in the area the old water mill at Cromford near Matlock is OK, they are supposed to be repairing it but haven't got very far.

My sister is a photography student though and she took some pretty cool pics of what appeared to be abononed pictures in Moss Side Manchester and also towards the Church Street part of Preston town Centre.
You can go to the base libary to see if they have an info on the local economy or could try itt on the base. I was stationed in Guam, (navy) and got out and followed my husband to Naples Italy and Sasebo Japan. Sometimes these two places have little historical facts about the place you are stationed.
go to your local library they should be able to give you a list of local attractions, or google for wigan you should find a site with suggestions on
