UK vs. Great Britain vs. England?

Travel Info
Okay- I know some of you may immediately want to start bashing me for being an ignorant American, but hey, I'm asking!

I hear these names used interchangeably, and want to know when you use each one. Is England/UK the same thing? ...and Great Britain includes Wales & Scotland, correct? Is Ireland lumped in too?

Travel Tips

UK is an abbreviation of United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are all part of the UK.

I have to admit that my first instinct was the 'ignarant American bashing response' but then i figured you have the sense to ask.

Come visit us some day!
UK stands for United Kingdom: In medieval times, Wales, Scotland, Ireland and England all had their own kings. However, after the Roman Empire, the English "conquered" Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. The UK is made up of Wales
England
Scotland
Northern Ireland

Great Britain was the name for it when they had the British Empire and is commonly called that. Great Britain consists of all the same countries that the UK has apart form Ireland:
England
Wales
Scotland

England is just a country on its own and has been subjected to numerous bombings by the IRA (Ireland Republican Army)_
UK = United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

Great Britain = Scotland, Wales and England

Therefore UK = Scotland, Wales, England and Northern Ireland.

Northern Ireland is not a part of Great Britain; that's why they call it the United Kingdom of Great Britain AND NORTHERN IRELAND.

The rest of Ireland (Eire) is a country by its very selfsome, because they don't like us very much! This is the cause of much of the conflict between Northern Ireland and Eire.
England is a country in its own,

Great britain is the land mass of england, wales and scotland

And the united kingdom is full state of england, wales, scotland and northern ireland
England is England
Great Britain is England + Scotland + Wales
UK is Great Britain + Northern Ireland (not the whole of Ireland)

hope that helps
I'm English
