Why do so many Americans refer to the UK as just England? |
Travel Info Sorry, but this is getting on my nerves. I'm not saying that all foreigners do it, but so many people seem to be unaware that England and the UK are two different things altogether! England is a part of the UK, along with Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. So how many Americans actually knew about the existence of the latter three? Because when I went to the US (Florida), not many people seemed to know about Wales. We do contribute a bit to the world you know - Bryn Terfel, Catherine Zeta Jones, Tom Jones... Ok I can't think of more, but there certainly are some! They seem to be more informed on Scotland, due to the film Braveheart. I don't really know how many know about Northern Ireland. Travel Tips because most americans are very uneducated in history and geography. i'll admit i'm one of them.by the way, i've never heard a canadian or mexican referred to as an american. that's just as bad as thinking all the uk is england. Others you are right, the UK is short for united kingdom. Some people are aware of that and still use UK to mean England. I am not particularly sure of the reason for that. In France this is even worse. Even on the news it's 'Angleterre' not 'le Royaume-Uni', and a lot of French people aren't even aware of the distinction. So it's not just the Americans. And you have to admit, it is slightly confusing, the whole system of four countries in one. Well... can you name all 50 states? Or at least the regions of the US? Probably not. There is so much to learn in the world that some information does get over looked. While it is important to you, it may not be as important to others. Just like you maybe not be able to tell us things that we consider important about the US, we may not be able to tell you important things about the UK. I did know about Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, but I can see the other side too. As my moniker implies (some_yank) I am an American. I am unfamiliar with this particular issue. I have always understood the regional distinctions. I think people of many nations might not understand the difference between the Republic of Ireland, and the six counties that comprise Northern Ireland (UK) As you name fameous Welsh people, you should not leave out Charlotte Church. She's brilliant. Cheers The majority of Americans can't find Mexico on a map, which is true, based on a study, and in some places in the US, half of the people are from there. So if they don't know where their closest neighbor is, how can you expect them to know anything about Wales? |
