Best Historical Places in Mid-Atlantic?

I am a history buff and I am considering taking a trip to one of three Mid-Atlantic States (either Maryland, Virginia or North Carolina). I realize that while Virginia and North Carolina are geographically in the Mid-Atlantic, they are actually more Southern in culture. Maryland, on the other hand, is more Northern. From a historical point of view, which of the three has the most interesting historical landmarks to visit? And not just Civil War History, but all history.

Fredericksburg Va, has to be on your list. Early American History, Revolutionary war, civil war, George Washington's home, Martha Washington, Robert E. Lee, all sorts of great history around there and plenty of great things are free or at a low cost.

Others
From the first English settlement in the New World (Colonial National Historic Park) to colonial era Williamsburg, to Revolutionary War site Yorktown, to hundreds of Civil War sites, to current Virginia Air and Space Center (Hampton/Newport News area), Virginia has enough to keep you occupied for a long vacation.
If you did MD or VA, you could also do Washington DC. Also VA has Jamestown, a living history town, and Monticello, and Fredricksburg.

NC has some Revolutionary War sites, King's Mountain comes to mind. Also there is Old Salem, in Winston Salem.

I live in NC, but for history I think VA is probably the place to see.
