Travel Info I am looking for free/cheap things to do in Salem, OR Travel Tips Here is a list of things I enjoy doing for free or for cheap in ANY city: Going to the public library and checking out their special collections. Riding the train/bus/other public transportation all around the city to see what you can see. Go to a big city park and hang out - if there is a water feature, feed the birds, swim, wade, whatever. Go to city hall/courthouse/other big public building. Go to the local historical society. Find the gay neighborhood, go for a walk in their shopping district. Find an ethnic neighborhood, go shopping there, or eat at a family owned restaurant. Go to whatever colleges and universities are in the city, and see if they have an art gallery or museum on their site. Also, they may have very reasonable theater or sport events. Sit on a downtown bus stop bench (or anywhere else there are lots of people for that matter) and watch the people. Go to the airport and watch the planes take off and land. Find out if there are any cemeteries or funeral homes that give a cemetery tour highlighting the local luminaries buried there. Contact the local tourist bureau for other good ideas.
