Where should I move in the North East?

I'm from California and I'm looking for a change. I've never been to the East coast but there's something there that I find apealing. I need somewhere safe and with good schools. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Boston- safe, fun and tons of history. Not a bad climate either (colder than California but not as bad as inland USA).
