Anybody been to Niagara Falls and the Finger Lakes Region of New York? |
Travel Info Any info you can pass along? I am going there next month. Any suggestions on places to eat? Any special deals I can take advantage of? Travel Tips I grew up going to Ithaca, NY every summer, at the base of Cayuga Lake. The one big thing you must do is visit vineyards- they are really incredible there. Lots of the vineyards do reasonable tastings and have lovely restaurants. Also, the Moosewood Restaurant in downtown Ithaca is world famous as a vegetarian restaurant with superb culinary skill. Even if you're not a vegetarian, this is an amazing restaurant...go for lunch for a bargain- amazing food but at a much lower price. Cayuga lake is beautiful- take in Stewart Park, which used to be used in silent movies- it's the base of Cayuga lake. There are also beautiful gorges all around Ithaca- Taughannock Falls, Tremain State Park, Buttermilk Falls (an old swimming spot that's gorgeous). Cornell University is a beautiful campus- their hotel school is world famous- and they have a beautiful hotel that is part of the school- worth having lunch or a drink to witness their students learning and working. Also, Carl Sagan's house is under Cornell's Campus on one of the gorges- very cool to see. Ithaca has a phenomenal farmer's market as a cheap way to breakfast/lunch right on the lake. The Commons in downtown Ithaca is a very cool walking street with lots of artsy stores. Niagara Falls- drive to Niagara on the Lake- a really charming town about 30 min from the Falls- wine country, as well, with beautiful lake homes. Charming! Source(s): http://www.ci.ithaca.ny.us/index.asp?typ... http://www.lamoreauxwine.com/ http://hosmerwinery.com/- famous for a wine with cats in a hot tub on the label- very funny! www.moosewoodrestaurant.com http://www.statlerhotel.cornell.edu/dini... Other Travel Tips I've been there, but it's been off season. March- which was very, very nice because everything had a thick coating of ice on it from the mist of the falls. So, when the light hit it everything looked like crystal. However, being that it was March it was very cold. On the upside not many tourists and everything is much cheaper. We stayed at Holiday Inn By the Falls and I think for the weekend it was $150 american dollars or less. That included 2 breakfasts and a dinner in the Skylon restaurant which revolves around.... I hope that helps.. |
