Need a vacation spot for my family, no amusement parks!!?

Travel Info
I live in Houston, TX and want to drive my family to a great vacation spot. I have 1 year old twins, a 16 year old son who loves the outdoors and my husband and I. We will be traveling in an RV loaded with toys and gear for the babies I am sure. The guys like fresh water fishing. We also like bike riding, hiking and generally poking around new places. I am just hoping to have fun on vacation with 2 toddlers! We need to go to Connecticut for business in July, but my husband thinks it would take to long to drive and eat into to man of our days off. We are anticipating lots of stops!! Any ideas? We have about 3 weeks to spend on this vacation.

Travel Tips
Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Hard to think of a better outdoor place in summer. Beautiful RV parks (I love the one in Newberry). Easy day trips to Mackinac Island where no motor vehicles are allowed, or to Pictured Rock National Lakeshore - either to hike, or take a scenic boat tour. Fishing from either the Superior or Michigan shorelines or by charter plus the best trout streams. Then Copper Harbor to tour a copper mine and hike along the coastline. What you won't find are 5 star hotels or restaurants (except Mackinac Island, maybe), but great outdoor fun, moose, bear and even the occasional wolf.
Others
Yea, a drive in an RV is time consuming and costly with the cost of gas the way it is. However sometimes we just need that time together with our family.
I have dual citizenship. I live here in Dallas for work, but my family lives in Missouri. I have enjoyed my times in the Ozarks there. Very beautiful and fun to drive, with lots of RV parks. Fishing and hiking galore, antique shops, canoe, swimming, etc.
Go for it guys, if you have the time and money, it will be a blast on the way to Connecticut.
Kelly's Island, off the coast of Ohio! You go out there on a ferry, can take your vehicles acrossed too. I have heard so many good things about it, thinking of going there myself soon. I live in Ohio and about 45 minutes from Sandusky, which is where it leaves from. Sandusky, Ohio is also nice and pretty, and not over crowded. Just watch those little ones closely, weirdo's out in the world, like the little girl that became missing last week, and was on vacation. Don't let them outta your sight, and have a great vacation!!
Go to Petersburg, Kentucky and see the new Creation Museum. Then go fishing at some nearby lakes. I'm a Thousand Trails member and they have some beautiful campgrounds that are very RV & people friendly. Otherwise, aren't there some nice islands to visit off of the gulf there in Texas. God bless you with your toddlers. Keep them safe. Short trips probably are best at this stage of their lives. But they will always remember their first fish they caught!!

I live in New Orleans and usually suggest that people consider visiting NOLA. It's still a good idea to stop here - if only to see what reality is and not what you get from the news media.

However, you live in Houston - another city that virtually defines "hot & humid" during the summer. Go somewhere cool.

Check around Asheville, NC (www.asheville.com). We visited the area in August a few years ago and stayed at a hotel (www.cataloochee-ranch.com) on top of a mountain. It was sweater-weather at night and the hotel had a welcome fire in the (big) fireplace in the lobby lounge!

There will be options other than hotels for staying in the Asheville area.

Hope you have a good trip!
Let me know if you want info on New Orleans.
