How much time do I need to see Yellowstone, Grand Teton and Mt. Rushmore? |
Travel Info I intend to visit in late September, and do not intend to hike. Just sightsee from car. Travel Tips Well even by car, you should allow a minimum of 3 days just for Yellowstone. You'll want to see Old Faithful & Old Faithful Inn. You'll want to see Lake Yellowstone, and you'll want to see all the various hot springs, thermal areas and waterfalls. Yellowstone is big, and with the windy roads and abundant animal life, driving through it can be slow going. If you haven't made reservations (even for camping, much less hotels), do it this very second, or it may be all booked up, and it's a long drive to the nearest accomodations outside the park. The Grand Tetons don't have much going on other than beauty, if you aren't getting out of the car, so a few hours driving around is plenty for that. You may want to spend a day in Jackson Hole, the restort-y town just South of the Tetons. It's a fun little rustic-yet-fancy small town. You might spot Harrison Ford or other celebrities who live there (I saw him there once). On your way from Yellowstone to Rushmoore, it would be worth it to stop at Devil's Tower National Monument, which was made famous in Steven Spielberg's movie Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind in the 70's. Not a lot to do there, but worth it for the pictures and it's on the way anyway. I haven't actually been to Mount Rushmore, but again, if you aren't hiking around much, then I can't imagine there's a lot to do other than stare at the faces and take a few pictures. So with driving time factored in (not counting wherever you are driving from), I would think 7 days would be about right. Others Three weeks. |
