24YO IRiSH GIRL MOVING TO US....WHICH STATE??? |
Travel Info I am a 24 year old Irish girl planning on immigrating to the US after christmas.. I am very out-going so would like somewhere with alot to do and a good night life I would like to go somewhere that is multi-cultural to broaden my mind. I am moving alone so I want somewhere safe. I don't want anywhere too expensive Any suggestions???? Travel Tips It sounds like you would fit in well in Chicago...always a lot to do and see and its very multi-cultural. We are well-known for our Irish population and have one of the largest St Patrick's Day parades around on the South Side of the City. Other Travel Tips you can move in with me No matter where you move there will be areas that won't be safe. I'd go with New York, Boston, Chicago or Southern California. But when you make your decision research the neighborhoods to make a final decision. I'd say California is your best bet. If you like it warm, go south -- the LA area. I have lived in Pasadena for 12 years and I love it. Check it out -- Glendale, too. If you prefer cooler temps, The Bay Area -- San Francisco,Oakland, Berkeley. California is great, but housing can be pricey. But if you just want somewhere inexpensive, find a college town in Colorado, Arizona or New Mexico, although they won't be as diverse. Good luck! Florida. I relocated here myself last June, though it was from Pennsylvania. However, cannot get enough of the beaches...it is pretty lax here, and I have greatly enjoyed my stay. There is deffinatly a mix of people here, from all over the world. I believe it is fairly safe in my city, I mean I wont lie...there of course, is crime as there is anywhere, but not too much where one needs to be a hermit. It is fairly inexpensive for the area...It is pricey, but also pay here is well...I have an apartment that I share with a roommate, and I pay $840 per month, also includes utilities, the gym, the pool, and hottub as well as tennis courts. Florida is a great place, if you love the beach.... Consider New Orleans. NOLA is one of the world's special places with an ambience unique in North America, and remains so even after Katrina devastated it in 2005. Katrina flooded about 80% of New Orleans with salt water, and the water stayed for almost a month. Much of the city is still struggling to recover and all you have to do to see devastation is drive around. It will take years for NOLA to fully recover from Katrina. However, the parts of the city that tourists usually visit were not flooded. It's not a coincidence - the French Quarter and other old parts of the city were built on relatively high ground and only suffered wind damage from Katrina. Almost all of the damage has been repaired and you have to look closely in the FQ and city center to see that Katrina happened at all. There is a lot to do in New Orleans, and lots of great nightlife (not just Bourbon Street).. The job market has exploded as companies resume operations and look for staff. Do confirm a job before moving here (same as for anywhere). The cost of living increased after Katrina but is still much lower than cities like New York, Chicago, and Los Angelas. Wages also increased after Katrina. You can drink the water, the electricity & phones work, and services like the post office, hospitals, schools, police/fire/EMS, and stores & shopping centers are operating. Municipal services like street cleaning & trash collection collapsed after Katrina and that is why you may see answers warning about the 鈥渟melly鈥?or "dirty" French Quarter. Those services were fully restored in late 2006 and it is no longer an issue. New Orleans stays green all year most years (rarely freezes and almost never snows). The weather is mild from late October to early May - summers are hot & humid. Regarding crime & safety, use the same common sense you need in every major city in the world and there is little chance you will be a victim of anything except a need to visit the gym: Pay attention to your surroundings. Stay away from anywhere dark & deserted. Pay attention to your feelings - if anyone or anywhere gives you a bad feeling, leave the area. Don't leave something like a camera-bag or backpack unattended on a park bench while you wander off to take photos. Etc. You would be part of the rebuilding of a great city! Please visit and see for yourself if you chose to live elsewhere. |
