If you had $5,000(limited budget) to take some time off by yourself, where would you go?

Travel Info
I'm a Veteran Marine that got out a couple years ago. Since then, I've been attending community college in California and currently looking to just relax, and take a couple weeks off somewhere nice by myself. Don't want to think about work, school, education, war, nothing,......Advice?

Travel Tips
Hello! I think a good start is getting away from TV for a bit. With 5K you could do a lot. I find that www.hotwire.com has been best website and they show their fares with all fees included. Since it is summer now, a lot of areas like Florida and South Carolina are really hot, however in USA I have found that the Adirondacks in Vermont are excellent and relaxing, for around 300$ a week (maybe less) you can rent out a nice little cabin with hot water/ electricity on a lake front, with canoing, hiking in the mountains, fishing, tanning, strawberry picking, swimming, sail boating, and a lot of nature sighting. Food is OK priced and there are a lot of local farmers that put up stands by the road giving you access to fresh fruit and vegetables. The cabins are far enough away from each other to give you privacy but most people on these "camping" grounds are very friendly and plenty of people of all ages to socialize with.

Another gorgeous place is the Outer Banks in North Carolina. I think it's even nicer there as there is the Atlantic Ocean. Much more of a beach culture there with wind surfing, diving, surfing, wind sailing, tons of fishing. Much more tourists during the summers and more of a night life and more people to meet and hang around with, not a retreat but one can still find calm areas. Hotels are quite expensive there but on www.craigslist.com one can put an ad in vacation rentals/ sublets or by searching local newspapers you could find a sublet that could cost you maybe 600-700$ a month, usually all furnished and all included. During tourist season though it pays to be patient in finding accommodations as the prices can be quite high.

If you want a vacation a bit more foreign, Canada can possibly offer you that. Canadians tend to be a lot less politically inclined and talk a lot less about the news and what not and this can offer a nice respite from America.

Quebec is a very French province that has a lot to offer to nature lovers and people who enjoy comfort as well. It's a nice European visit with gorgeous churches and nice old buildings and cobblestone streets with horse carts. real is a very cosmopolitan city with almost 40% international population and one can find all kinds of people, most of whom speak at least some English. Food is everywhere and entertainment is not lacking. Also a bit North of Montreal one can go whale sighting and boating/ sailing. A furnished sublet would go for 700$ and less. Good sites would be www.craigslist.com and www.kijiji.com . IF you want a more physical adventure with a bit of excitement and more unknowns South America can be an interesting stay and a lot of guides speak good English. Also food/ hotel can be very cheap depending on your tastes. It is now winter in Southern Hemisphere but northern South America is pretty much temperate (or hot depending where you are) all year round.

A few people here mentioned Europe and this could be a really neat choice. If you check out hostels (even Youth Hostels are open to people of most ages you can get quite a deal on rooms (starting at 12$ a night for a private room in Greece). www.hihostels.com/ or just google hostels Europe and you will get a lot of helpful websites.

Hope this helps!

Take a trip to Greece. You won't regret it.
Big trip: Italy. You don't need to speak the language (but you can try, its fun), and you can't beat the culture.

Little trip: Boston.
i think i will use the money for something better, because the tickets to and fro will be really expensive and accomodations too. oh well, it ur money do what you want to do with it...
hi

i did something very similar myself 5 years ago. took time off and went to Europe. was on a budget too but still managed to have a great time and saw much since many great cities are within short distances to each other in Europe.

get some ideas for destinations on www.travellingbazaar.com or buy the europe guide book from lonely planet
My husbands job just moved us to Helena Montana and its absolutely beautiful here...expecially if you like mountains....theres ALOT of hiking trails and quite places....also its not very hot here highs are usually in the mid 80s if it gets that high.
