Why is the last S in Arkansas silent? Why dont we say Ar(Kansas)? |
Travel Info Why is the last S in Arkansas silent? Why dont we say Ar(Kansas)? Travel Tips It's all about people and the way they speak. The place had a Native American tribal name way back before the white people stole it. It later became part of the Louisiana Purchase and white people squabbled about how to say the French name it had been given; some said ArKANSAS and others ARkanSAW . In 1881 there was a decision made by some well-fed white people with mustaches that it would be ARkanSAW from then on. Source(s): I looked it up Other Travel Tips because the english language doesn't make sense at all. because the people in arkansas don't be speakin right (hahahaha) Good question. I had a math teacher from Arkansas and he jokingly pronounced "Kansas" as "Ken-saw" and said that Kansans pronounce "Arkansas" as "Ar-Kansas". In the early days of statehood, a couple of U.S. Senators had some disagreement on the spelling and pronunciation of Arkansas. One preferred to be called the senator from Arkan"saw" and the other preferred to be called the senator from Ar"Kansas". In 1881, the conflict was resolved when the state General Assembly passed a resolution stating that the state's name was to be spelled "Arkansas" but pronounced Arkan"saw". So, basically, the answer to your question is that it's a reminder that compromise works but is sometimes annoying. http://www.netstate.com/states/intro/ar_... |
