Swimming off the Oregon coast??? |
Travel Info This probably sounds silly to those of you who live there, but we are travelling to Oregon, (Cannon Beach) this summer. We will be there in the middle of AUGUST. Will it be hot/warm enough to swim in the ocean? Is this something we should plan to do or are the beaches just for outdoor fun, not swimming? All of the pictures I've seen, I don't see anyone past their ankles in the water. Travel Tips The water off Oregon is always cold. You cannot swim there without a full body wetsuit. By the way, pack a jacket! I was in Oregon last June/July...there was a freakish heat wave, with temps in Portland and Eugene above 100! But...on the same day, the HIGH temp in Newport (just south of Canon Beach) was 69!! The coastal road is a beautiful drive, and there are several sand beaches...the best in my opinion is at Seaside. Have a great trip!!! Others The Pacific Ocean was very cold in June when I was there. I was around the Newport, Oregon area. Don't know if it gets warmer in August......warm enough to go deeper than the ankles. The beaches there in the Oregon Coast are very scenic in some parts. I think they are an artist's delight. You can't swim in Oregon at any part of the year without a wet suit, and a winter one at that. The ocean currents run south along the coast from Alaska and the water is frigid all year. In fact the water really doesn't get warm enough until half way down between San Francisco and Los Angeles. There is still plenty to do at the beach, just swimming isn't one of them. |
