Have you ever attended the Maine Lobster Festival in Rockland? |
Travel Info I am thinking about making the trip from Texas (LOOONG way!) and want to know if the festival is worth it. Thanks! Travel Tips I wouldn't base your trip solely on the Lobster Festival. I did a scallop festival in Cape Cod and it surely wasn't worth a whole week's vacation. Having said that, the central coast of Maine is one of the most lovely areas in the Northeast. There is SO much to do, a week would hardly be enough. There are lighthouses all up and down the coast, some small, some on rocky cliffs. the Lighthouse Museum is in Rockland, so you can get an idea of any you want to see from there. The Farnsworth Art Museum hosts an impressive collection of American art, including a Wyeth center that houses works by Jamie, N.C. and Andrew Wyeth. To the north is the charming village of Camden - shops, boat tours, harbor, cafes art galleries. To the south - Owls head Point - and a nice lighthouse there too. From there you can sail on lots of day cruises. I found a neat one called "A morning in Maine" on a 55 foot ketch led by a marine biologist - holds 21 passengers -$30pp. See the link below. You are still only 2 hours north of Portland. You could easily spend a day there. Portland Head Light is the quintessential maine lighthouse photographed, painted, and reproduced in cards and books. The city itself has lots to see and shop around. Between Rockland and Porland is Freeport - of course - Home to LL Bean. visit their big flagship store for clothes, camping gear, kitchen and home stuff, everything for trek and table. Rent a nice car - maybe a convertible even, and enjoy the drive up and down the winding roads along the rocky coast. Eat yourself silly on Lobster - and enjoy your trip!
