Why do people bash The Northern States, most notably, New Jersey?

Travel Info
Let me first say that I have posted negative things about my home state, NJ, here in yahoo answers. However, after visiting many places in this country, I have come to realize that the NJ/NY area is one of the best places to live. As many drawbacks as it has (fast paced, expensive, and high taxes) it does have everything you could ever want here (the beach, the city, high paying jobs, nice honest people, the mountains, forests, farmland, less racism and homophobia, and I could go on and on and on.

I've visited The Pacific North West and its cloudy, dreary, rainy and depressing most of the time (even though its beautiful), the south is way too hot, has too much crime, and has more of a backwards fundamentalist way of thinking, In the heartland not much diversity in landscape and too much of the same...

But when i get back to New Jersey, I feel alive, happier, and have everything I would ever want or need. I guess home really is where the heart is.

NY/NJ bashing is ignorant.

Travel Tips
I agree with you. I'm from NJ myself, actually just across the Arthur Kill from Staten Island. I just graduated college in the south, Virginia actually, and I have to say, there is absoltuely nothing to do there. The only thing to do for fun is the great outdoors (which is not me at all), or the bar scene (I don't drink and am allergic to tobacco).

Its bad on the allergies with all the pollen flying around. I was constantly sick. And a lot of my professors who were born and raised in the south were still fighting the Civil War. And yet they denied it, so I dont know.

In NJ/NY theres plenty of things to do, I'm never bored, and the mall has more than one floor.

If people bash this part of the country, then I feel sorry for them for not giving it a chance.
Others
A lot of my family is from the NJ/NYC area. The only thing I don't like about it is that most of them live way outside their means and they're not doing anything too out of the ordinary. This is just my experience, but it seems like things are so fast paced and the cost of living is so high that it's sort of hard to genuinely get by. I like visiting, but I doubt I'd want to live there.
I think you've already said it - home is best. It's best because you are used to it and your family and friends are there. You made some negative comments about other parts of the country, not realizing that people who live in those places think they live in the best places possible. It's all ethnocentric perception.

Specifically, if you want to know why people from other parts of the country say negative things about the North and New Jersey, it's probably because so many people in the North look down on people from elsewhere, especially the South. Too often I've heard comments stating that the South is slow and non-progressive. These comments refer to the quality of education and schools, how messy/trashy/dirty everthing is, how ignorant and unsophisticated people are, the way people talk/accents, etc.

People in the South oftentimes think that people from the North are loud, rude, crude snobs who talk with irritating, difficult-to-understand accents. However, they rarely tell a Northerner that because they tend to be polite, courteous people.

It's fine to enjoy where you live, but don't fall into the trap of assuming you live in the best possible place and that nowhere else measures up.
Born in New Jersey - raised in California - currently live in Kentucky
