Travel Tips
I have livesd in Alaska off and on since 1996 and I love it and hate it all at once. I have lived in Juneau and Anchorage. There is allot to do in Anchorage and jobs are not hard to find. The Housing can be a bit high unless you already live in a area with high housing you wont tell the difference. I used to get the PFD every year but I moved out of the state and I no longer get it. My family still lives up there and my mother is goign home soon she is here working at the hospital as a traveler. Well here are some sites to look through on jobs, Housing, and fun in Anchorage I cant say much about the rest of Alaska. I have tons more sites but I thought you would only need a few to see what everyting is like for work and living. If you have any more questions about Alaska I can answer them. As for the last link its the major bar in Anchorage and trust me its a fun place to go and there are lots of people that end up standing in line around the block to get in the place some nights. I kind of miss it there but I really love the heat I am in right now. As for the weather its not that bad in the winter its fun seeing all the cars and trucks in the ditch from people who move there that have no clue what Studded tires are or have never seen snow. So have fun looking into the sites I got for you. I know that there is a ton of others I have so all you have to do is ask. Source(s): http://www.adn.com/

Other Travel Tips
Yeah it's expensive to live there. I've lived in Anchorage so I can only talk about that one city. The pay starts out more an hour than other places, around $10/hr is the norm for min wage type jobs. You can get an apt in the ghetto for $700-$900 a mth. You can get an apt on the outskirts of the ghetto for about a grand a month. If you make decent money your usual rent will be about 2 grand a mth. The food cost is higher there but better quality of food and more choices because of the availability of different types of markets. There is no state tax so you pay what the cost is really. Unfortunately everything is sometimes almost twice what it would cost in other states like say, FL, WA, AZ.
It really does even out though. You can always find roomates and there is low-cost housing downtown for single people with no kids. There is section 8 housing for single moms and their welfare system kicks out the highest amount of cash and food assistance than anywhere. Plus if you can make it 2 yrs there and stay you'll start getting a state divedend that is paid out to you and each of your kids (if you have any). It's really not that bad cost wise when you're already living there, you won't even notice. The entertainment is eating out, going to movies, going to bars, iditarod race, first friday, downtown is entertaining if your into the art scene. Camping and hiking is always fun. Going to Beluga point and whale watching, skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, sledding. Seeing the Navy ship downtown when it ports. I don't know. I'm sure there are lots of things I missed but that's the gist of it. Go to Craigslist.com and look at there housing ads to see what's available. You could even find a roomate there too.
