What is your opinion of Little Rock, Arkansas? |
Travel Info We're thinking of moving to Little Rock for a job opportunity (in our 30s w/ kids), and I just don't have a good picture of the place. We're liberal, don't hunt/fish, and are not from the south. Will we have a hard time fitting in, or does Little Rock offer something for everyone? Thanks in advance. Travel Tips Although Little Rock is the biggest city in Arkansas, it isn't that big. It is still very small town in nightlife opportunities. I think LR has something for everyone, but I grew up in Arkansas so my opinion is biased. A list of hobbies you do enjoy would help in deciding if it is right for you. And being liberal isn't a problem --unless your swingers--the neighbors might take issue with that ; ) A lot of people with children actually commute from Conway or Cabot (which are both about 30 minutes away). Others Little Rock offers a lot of things, i mean when I was a kid just imagining going a diffrent state ROCKS. Ark. is a very out doors type place, but the people are so friendly and welcoming! There is something there for everyone to do, a very unique place and one of the most clean and beautiful I have ever visited. I won't lie when saying that it will be a bit of a culture shock if you are not used to the South or the outdoors, but at the same time I loved my adventure there and would love to go back one day or maybe even retire there with my husband later. Have vacationed there and in MO two time for a month total p.s. visit this site for info on what they offer and relocation information http://www.arkansas.com/helpful-info/fre... DO NOT TAKE THAT JOB!!! It is a very conservative area, it is in the bible belt. But the hardest thing will be the fact that you are not 'southern'. You and your family will experience a form of racism. Southern hospitality is reserved for visitors, not for new people that moved in. I lived there during high school and some colledge Where were you raised or where have you been living in the past will help a lot. It will determine the level of shell shock you may experience. It is country and towns are a lot smaller but that is not always a bad thing. There are things to do and places to go but not as many as a larger city. I don't know the crime rates but there is always info on the net about that. If you are big beach people then you might be disappointed. The south is slower and I don't mean that in a bad way for those that are from the south. If you are from the midwest it won't be a huge change, the east or west you will really notice the difference. ** Some important questions you will want to ask yourself are... Can you handle allergies or heavier pollen counts? More and bigger bugs i.e mosquitos? And lastly my favorite, humidity! The first 2-3 years in the south I was ok and didn't suffer but after that It was a mess. Humidity is a pain and the bugs are another story. I am from San Diego and I didn't like it at all. North Carolina was ok. I have driven, lived, and have had visits in and around North Carolina, Florida, Georga, Arkansas. Good luck on your decision! Your best bet may be the internet (not people) for ideas because some may be bias (like myself). |
