Last I knew, 50. That's counting Hawaii and Canada. Maybe some day, there will be a couple more.

50 States. There are also countries, like American Samoa, which are called unincorporated territory of the US.
If you want to get technical, there are 46 "states" and 4 "Commonwealths" that are considered and counted at states by most people. They are the Commonwealths of Kentucky, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. In addition, there are 2 more Commonwealths (Northern Marianas and Puerto Rico) that are not counted as states. There are also one district (Washington, District of Columbia) and 2 territories (American Samoan, & Guam) and the Virgin Islands.
