If you live in an apartment on the beach when a hurricane comes, what do you do? |
Travel Info I am planning on moving to panama city beach, fl, but i'm afraid of the hurricanes. I am moving into an apartment. I need to know what are the steps I need to take when a hurricane is coming. Does the apartment complex do anything? What if the apartment complex is unliveable when it's over? Travel Tips It depends on the building- some have hurricane shutters that you can shut that protect the whole building, in other buildings, each apartment is on its own. If I were you I wouldn't worry about it too much- just put your most valuable stuff in one place so you can grab it if you need to evacuate, buy renters insurance and furniture, tvs, clothes, etc. can be replaced. Then make sure you evacuate every time that there's a hurricane coming- let the landlord worry about the apartment. Others Board up and get ready; bad enough you head to a shelter till it's over. Building managers have lots of experience getting back on line after storms there should be a evac. plan for your area, have a safety kit on hand, and get out when told to, you can always get another aprt. if it's bad enough you need to board the windows to keep them from breaking. if it's really bad, you need to pack your s*%$ and leave. I live right outside of New Orleans. we've had plenty of experience. the small storms you can weather them out (stay) but the big ones, you have to go. Don't be afraid of them. the chances of another "horrible" one like katrina are slim!! Just leave quickly. Evacuate and do it early enough to beat the traffic. Go further inland and get a hotel room. Take your important papers and belongings with you. |
