I'm moving to Omaha, Nebraska. What parts do I need to stay away from? |
Travel Info I know there are always parts that have higher crime rates and I would generally need to walk faster through. What are they? Travel Tips "Bad" in Omaha is a lot safer than many cities of its size. I can't think of any areas that I'd be really afraid of going in daylight. After dark, you want to avoid North and South Omaha, on the eastern side of the city. "Avoid everything below 80th" is an exagerration (Happy Hollow, one of the best neighborhoods in Omaha and the area where Warren Buffett lives, is under 80th, for example, and there are some other nice areas near UNO in Midtown and the Old Market and Riverfront areas downtown as well) but it's a good starting point until you learn the city better. David is right that Omaha is not a walking city, however. It's getting to be more of one, but progress that direction has been very slow and you'll need a car to get around, *especially* if you live above 80th. If you won't have a car, Dundee might be your best bet. It's a decent neighborhood that's older and a bit better set up for walking than most, as well as being centrally located and unusually well served by Omaha's pathetic public transportation system. It does border both good and bad neighborhoods, however, so definitely visit any place you're considering moving first to make sure its not on one of the iffier sides. Source(s): long-time Omaha resident Other Travel Tips I just went there for the College world Series. The Neighborhood around Rosenblatt Stadium and Henry Dorly Zoo was pretty bad. Lots of guys with tattoos, the houses are rotting, moldy, many people drinking and drunk. I went there. According to my mom, everything below 80th street. In Omaha, you don't walk around; you drive. The place is really spread out. I thought the suburbs looked just like the movies depict them: clean & well kept. Find a temporary place to stay and learn the city. There are small communities like near the U that are as peaceful as {Omaha sized} cities get. I don't think the place is really that bad but then again I am comparing it to other nasty places I have been (Gary, Newark, etc). |
