How is Alabama?

Travel Info
I live in Southern CA, 15 miles outside of LA. I want a change from the heavy traffic, high prices and unfriendly people. My neighbor's parents are from Alabama. I am looking for a place that is slow-paced with a low cost of living and affordable housing. I am not a mountain person. I don't ski. The long, winding roads cause me motion sickness. Where in Albama would be a good town or city to live in? Help appreciated.

Travel Tips
You have Mobile on the Gulf Coast, which is a pretty city, your close to the beaches in Florida but you also have hurricanes. Birmingham is just too crowded. Huntsville is another nice town in Northern Alabama which is not crowded and the people are pretty nice. Keep in mind that the Southern Baptist are really big in Alabama. Great weather in the state and you couldn't ask for better people.
Others
Visit Alabama pretty soon to get a feel for the hot, humid summers. You may find it tolerable, or you may find it terrible since you're in CA where there's no humidity. Huntsville is, in my opinion, the best area in Alabama. Good schools, friendly people, and everything you need.
