How is parking at South Rim of Grand Canyon?

I am reading in travel guides I should take a bus or train to south rim of the Grand Canyon because there is limited parking in summer. We are going the 1st week in August. Can we drive and if so, what time do we need to arrive to get a parking space?

Definitely drive it and use Desert View as your primary entrance to GCNP not the Tusayan Entrance.
Desert View is better for a couple reasons the first being the obvious; the view of Canyon is much better. Unlike the view from the area by the hotels , from Desert View/ Navajo Pt /Lipan PT[my favorite view } the river is not only clearly visible but it's a dominant feature in the landscape,.
Also all the GCN geology is present .
Another thing that makes Desert View so much better is the ride needed to get there . Either traveling North or South on US 89- which is incredibly beautiful onto itself and then that spectacular uphill run to GCNP. The trip up SR 64 from Williams to Tuysayan/ GCNP is boring.
If use US 89 [and you should]get gas in Gray Mountain or Cameron before using SR 64 to the Park.
Cameron Trading Post is definitely worth a visit and is fairly decent place to stay & also get a meal - and their stock of Pendelton blankets is amazing.
The Trading post is just north of the US 89/sr 64 jct.

Other Travel Tips
We went there last November and there's parking but it's super crowded, which probably is why they say limited. We had to park along the roadway and it was a bit of a walk from where we parked.
We were fine when we went. We went in July when it was really crowded and found parking spots. We just parked at the hotel and walked 2 minutes to the rim.
