Vacation Spot - No Car or Long Walks Required? |
Travel Info My grandparents are looking for a fun vacation spot in the United States where they wouldn't need to have a car and a place where there is a lot for them to do without walking great distances. Any suggestions? Thanks. Travel Tips I would suggest St. Augustine to them. There are a ton of hotels/motels/B&B鈥檚 in the old town area. Everything is within walking distance and they even have a cool trolley tour that will take you to some of the sites that are further out. The service also includes discount tickets to some of the major sites with its tours and there is even a beach bus to get them to and from the beach. You can buy a 3 or 7 day admission ride all you want during that time. St. George Street is in the heart of downtown. They have several wonderful restaurants, shops and other things to do. There is always some type of reenactment here! People from all over come to St. Augustine it is the oldest city in the US and is rich with history! I really think they would enjoy it here, people are friendly and the city is very walkable. The closest airport if they are flying would be JAX or Daytona and both offer cheap taxies/busses/shuttles to St. Augustine. They cost like $20 bucks and can be scheduled ahead of time. No worries not having a ride. Here are some places for them to enjoy: A must stop is the St. Augustine Alligator Farm. This place has been entertaining families since 1915. Way cool place, they have a ton of stuff to do and you get to touch and alligator. . Feeding time is very fun to watch make sure you line up early so you get a good spot. You can get a coupon off their website or from the visitor鈥檚 center. Also get the big drink cup the refills are cheap and you can share. http://www.alligatorfarm.us/ Take a Trolley Tour. You will see the red trolleys all over and it is a great way to see the city. Admission is pretty cheap and is good for 3 days and you get on off rights. They take you to all the major sites, and pick you up. You can buy different packages that include admission to most of the major places in the city. You can also get discounts for the Trolleys on their website, at the visitor鈥檚 center, or at your hotel. http://www.redtrains.com/ The old Jail is very cool to see and is one of the oldest in the US. You get to go into the cells and there is stuff to do on site while you wait for your tour. They also give you a lot of time to walk around the jail and take pictures. The cost was pretty cheap again there are coupons. The Sheriffs Ghost Tour is just great! This guy gives the best ghost tour in town and really entertains you. It is a walking tour but, it is something different to do at night. The cost was like $10pp and again you can find coupons if you check out his site There are two old forts in St. Augustine and both of them are really cool! There is a lot of stuff to do and each one has people dressed up. They also give free lectures and tell stories. They have events for kids of all ages! The major one in town is Castillo De San Marco. This place is way cool and one of the oldest around. The whole thing is made up of shells鈥?you will learn about it. Your admission is good for 7 days and they even shoot the cannons off sometimes. http://www.nps.gov/casa/ There is also Fort Mantanza, there is not cost for this place and you get to take a free boat ride to get to it. Settled up on the river it is a ton of fun and the kids have a great time getting there. There is a small park where the dock is that has picnic tables and restrooms. They also have a few hiking trails. Very fun and Very free! Go see the Spanish Quarter, the entrance is located off of St. George Street and it is a delight for all. They have people working such as a blacksmith, a scribe ect鈥?The whole thing is set up just like when people first came to St. Augustine. The characters interact with the visitors; they can ask questions and get hands on. They also learn a little about history and life with not TV. This place is very cool and I would Highly suggest going. http://www.historicstaugustine.com/... See the Lighthouse. They have done a wonderful job at restoring this lighthouse. They also have a museum attached that comes with your admission. You get to climb all the way to the top and you get the best views of the area. . On the grounds of the lighthouse there is also picnic tables and some short walking trails.. Again there are coupons if you look for them. www.staugustinelighthouse.com Checkout Marineland. This place has been around for a long time and they are dedicated to preserving and caring for dolphins. General admission is like $5 and there are some really cool things to see. They also have some cheap interaction time with dolphins. For like $15 you hold a canvas and have a dolphin paint them a picture, they have all kinds of programs and they are just wonderful here! I always love going. The Fountain of Youth is located here. Hate to say it but I do not feel any younger now that I have been there. The grounds are also home to an ancient Indian Burial ground and they have several other things on the grounds. They do have a small but, wonderful planetarium that tells all about Ponce De Leon and his travels to the new world. Full of sound effects and flashing lights. Nice. Be sure to check out the changing of the guard at the Governors house. They have men dressed in costume that reenact the changing of the guard. They really shoot muskets which is cool and it is FREE! Afterwards they answer all of your questions let you take pictures ect. Educational and very fun! If you have never seen this it is a site! On St. George Street you will also find the oldest wooden school house in America. People get a kick about this; they cannot believe that people went to school like this! They give you a small tour and it is cheap fun and again educational. Friday and Sat. nights at the Tavern of De Gallo they have guys who sing old sea shanties while dressed in costume. All ages are welcomed till 9鈥?.they the lyrics um turn adult. They serve soda, beer and wine. Listen to great music and sing a long. They love it when kids are there and ask them to join in. You sit outside and meet a lot of people. Fun for all. Here are some more websites that might help you; I use them to plan our trips when we go: http://www.staugustine.com/ www.oldcity.com www.ci.st-augustine.fl.us/visi... www.getaway4florida.com www.staugustinechamber.com www.historicstaugustine.com They also have links to the above mentioned places.
