Can I use a European debit card for ATMs in the USA.? |
Travel Info Please note that this is NOT a credit card (I have that too), but a debit card - or a bank card which I can use for withdrawing cash at ATMs here in Europe. Travel Tips Yes just watch that you only use machines that have the symbol corresponding with your card, ie, cirus or plus. You will only be able to access a chequing account though, not a savings account. Also make sure you have a 4 digit pin. Anything else and you may run into trouble. Others Yep. The only thing is that they will charge you from $0.50 to $2.00 at the ATM. As long as there's the same logo (Cirrus, etc.) from the network your bank on the ATM as there is on your card - most of the time, the network logos are on the back of the card, it should work. It should tell you upfront about any fees the bank who owns the ATM will instill on your account - in addition to any fees your bank charges. If your card is from a major European bank you should have no trouble. I have used HANSA BANKA in USA with no troubles. Just know the fees may surprises you. If the ATM is not affiliated with a bank they will charge you up to 5 dollars per transmission, the bank in USA may charge you plus your home bank will charge you for not using their ATM. It will add up rapidly. Also know in America the hotels may charge you up to $75 dollars to hold against it. Even if your fees per room are not as high. These deductions will surprises you next as you assume you have money in your account but someone is holding it to see if you will exceed your normal charges Good Luck I don't think you can use a debit card outside the country of issue. I don't know for sure though because I have never HAD a debit card... always a VISA card. If your debit card has the visa or master logo you can most probably use it every ATM around the world which has those symbols. If you have a ATM card without those logos you cannot use it. have no fear - debit card works just fine -- but there will be a small service charge just like the 1% we pay when we to to europe. |
