If your still wanting a hotel then stay out of the bigger cities such as Edinburgh and Glasgow which can get very expensive and go to smaller towns such as Perth, Inverness or Aberdeen. Public transportation there is excellent (at least it is compared to the US!) and all of these towns mentioned above just happen to be on the railline. I've been from Shetland Islands to the Isle of Arran and many place inbetween with nary a problem. Enjoy!! I always stay in the premiere inn just off george square in the center of glasgow its 拢59 per night per room and is central for all transport links (walking distance) and also all the shops are minutes away its clean and the staff are always there to help Aros-Ard B&B in Oban West Coast of Scotland is AMAZING.
