Theatres - Theatre Royal Glasgow? |
Travel Info What are the best seats to buy when booking tickets for this venue? There are several areas: Stalls, upper circle, dress circle and balcony. I have never been to a theatre so any advice on seating appreciated :-) Lee. Travel Tips you should try for the stalls, in the centre and about 7-12 rows back. Failing that go for the centre of the dress circle as near to the front as possible. Enjoy the show. Others [edit] First Theatre The first theatre on the present site was called (James)Baylis's Royal Colosseum Theatre and Opera House, and opened four days late, on Thursday 28 November 1867 with sensational dramas called The Sea of Ice & The Gold Seeker of Mexico. The name was changed to the Theatre Royal by charter granted by Queen Victoria in May 1869, by the new owners, Messrs William & Glover. [edit] Second Theatre After two fires, in 1879 and 1895, the theatre was reconstructed by renowned theatre architect Charles J. Phipps for its owners Howard & Wyndham (who also built the King鈥檚 Theatre which opened in 1904) and so began the long and successful association of the Theatre Royal with the best in the world of entertainment. In 1956, The Theatre was sold to Scottish Television for conversion into a studio complex, before being purchased by Scottish Opera and re-opened in October 1975 with Die Fledermaus. The Theatre Royal has continued to go from strength to strength, presenting its home company, Scottish Opera, but also Scottish Ballet. In March 2005, the management of the theatre was transferred to the Ambassador Theatre Group, but will still be the main home for Scottish Opera.
