What's your opinion on Dennistoun, Glasgow?

Is it good place to live with children? How would you compare East to West End?

thank you

Doesn't really answer your question but a bit of useless trivia.

The reason most major cities in Britain have an East End - tends to be poor, tenements, slums and West End - expensive townhouses is that in the olden days when cities were industrial centres the factory smoke always floated East due to the wind coming in from the West and therefore the poor were dumped there.

In answer to your question if I had kids I would move further out wouldn't worry about where is rough as all of the towns surrounding Glasgow have good and bad areas and you'll know them when you see them. If you have money Bearsden/Bishopbriggs is a good bet if not Coatbridge/Cambuslang/Ruthergl... all have nice modern estates which are quite quiet and good for kids.

Hmmmm......

Dennistoun is starting to get a bit of investment put into it and 30 - 40 years ago was a desirable place to live ( Grand parents came from there). It's location is very close to Glasgow City Centre ( about 1 - 2 miles away).

Glasgows west end on the otherhand is in a different league. still very built up urban living but with house prices to rival anyother Major sought after city centre location. Very much professional types and flooded with students at night. Top end restaurants and cafe culture very evident here. Trouble with both Dennistoun and West End is a lot of Traffic and congestion issues and not the sort of place I would have been happy growing up in.

As for previous post Cumbernauld being worse than Dennistoun....I don't think so!!!!........Well perhaps living to the south of the A80 you might have a point. .
Chances of being beaten up in Denniston-75%

Chances of being beaten up in West-end 1%

You decide
Dennistoun is not as bad as some people would have you believe. It has the beautiful Alexandra Park - a great place to take the kids. It is also not that far from the town and also close to the Parkhead Forge - great shopping centre. The West End is also a lovely place - more geared towards students rather than children, although there is the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Transport Museum there and it's also not too far from the town. Think the house prices in the West End are more expensive though. Six of one and half a dozen of the other in most ways I suppose!
When I was born there a long time ago it was up market but now its like anywhere else in Glasgow although the east end area is said to be the worse place to stay as there is more unemployment and seemingly you die at a younger age if you live there, although there is a lot of new houses being built there especially around Parkhead where the old belvidere hospital was is now being built as private estate and hence the council house in the area are being modernised. I'm not prejudiced but there is a lot of ethnic people live there.
Ask the Indian guy that collects tickets in Glasgow Central,or one of his mates, what it's like being an outsider in Dennistoun. You've got a young kid, give the east end a wide berth.
