Travel Info What is the best way to get a cheap holiday in Greece? I want to go somewhere quiet by the sea!? Travel Tips Sometimes, the big travel companies make last minute offers at a very good price, but they tend to be in noisy hotels. However, they're worth trying. Some have brochures which specialise in small accommodations. I just look for a convenient, cheap flight from my local airport to any SMALL Greek island; and then type in eg "samos, apartments" into Yahoo search and see what comes up. You can get into the tourist board of that island and find websites offering studios. These are just double/twin bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, a small kitchenette in a corner and a verandah with chairs and table. If they are in small blocks owned by a private family, you usually get just a snackbar and a place to sit in the shade outside. They almost always say how far they are from the sea. You pay a bit more for one which is right next to the sea. (Some have a small pool, but that's not essential because you can go and use anyone's pool, if you buy a drink; and anyway, you're going to be by the sea.) They vary in price from around 25 euros a night per twin room in May to 50 euros a night in July-August. If you book through a holiday bureau, they have been inspected, and you can ask the holiday bureau questions - like, do they have mosquito screening? If it's July or August, ask for air-conditioning. That will be about 5 - 7 euros per day extra. This time, I've booked privately, with some people who have their own land and make their own olive oil. I was able to ring them because they speak some English. There are tavernas everywhere, offering good meals for 拢5 - 拢10 in a good atmosphere, and Greek takeaway food is super. Some supermarkets have a takeaway section. Finally, you can do some research on various websites where travellers give their own opinions. Just type in the name of the island in Yahoo search. As an example - I saw a super-looking place advertised, right on the sea, in Samos, at Psilli Amos. http://www.elenaapartments.gr I rang them and was told 45 euros for a twin room per night in June. The only reason why I didn't book it was that my local airport does not fly to Samos, and that increased the hassle of getting there. I did not get as far as asking about mosquito screening, but it's not so essential right at the sea. Others Last minute deal - although you will find it difficult to get any cheap flights until after 23rd May when the Champions League final has taken place. book it in advance like 2weeks you should get some good deals online. If you are a camping fan, you will not have a problem. Camping in Greece is very cheap. The other solution is the last minute deal. When you reach the island, there is a lot of people waiting out of the ship to offer you a place to stay. Of course, I advise you not to do that, if you intend to go to Santorini or Mykonos, because it's not guaranteed that you'll find a place. Very touristic islands. your best bet is to go to travel agent about early september..we do that most years the best one we got was 2 weeks half board lardos rhodes greece..pefkos just up the road quiet lovely beach not croweded...we paid 拢500 for 2 ppl for to weeks....going to halkidiki this year we paid 拢600 for 2 weeks 2 ppl the best deal i have had to crete was a last minute deal in my local travel agent 2 weeks for 216 pounds each sunset holidays it was brilliant have also been to kos and zante all lovely places hope u find something and enjoy urself Try Kosmar holidays - cheaper than the rest and very good. I've been with them 3 times. Your travel agent should have a brochure or they do have a website. |
